Afgelopen zaterdag bezocht Alison Pinn met haar man het monument bij het gemeentehuis. Ze is de dochter van de zus van John Fay. Kortom... John is een oom van haar. Haar moeder is januari jl. overleden op 97-jarige leeftijd...met spijt dat ze nooit in Haaren geweest is waar haar broer gesneuveld is.Ook nog Tom van Alphen ontmoet, die er bij was destijds !
Een kleine toelichting: John Fay uit Engeland vocht in Haaren voor onze bevrijding en stierf op de hoek van de Kapelweg en de Roonsestraat. Zijn helm werd door Tom van Alphen gevonden in de Belverse Akkers. De naam van John Fay staat uiteraard eervol vermeld op het monument op het Mgr. Bekkerplein. Opdat wij nooit vergeten...
Reactie van Alison Pin aan Paul: I cannot thank you enough for spending some of your precious family time to show us around Haaren on Saturday and for the gift of the book. It was totally amazing to hear what happened on 26 October 1944 and also the stories of the village before that date and after. Seeing where things happened brought history to life, especially speaking to someone who was there at the time, and it will remain with us always.Knowing that there is a memorial to John and the others who sadly lost their lives is very special and I would like to thank everyone in Haaren for keeping their stories alive.We are certainly going to pass all the information on to our children, and grandchildren when they are older, and hopefully they too will visit Haaren.
Ook daarom herdenken wij, elk jaar weer......................
